Yutanpo (a metal container makes your feet warm)
When I was a little girl, my parents used to say, “It’s time to go night-night”. Then I answered “I don’t want to sleep yet because my bed is TOO COLD!” Mom said “Oh, don’t worry. I put a hot water bottle for warmth in bed.” with smiling. This is the time I feel winter has come.
A yutanpo which is a Japanese hot water bottle and it made of metal. I really loved a yutanpo. If there is a yutanpo in my bed, I didn’t feel lonely at all. I could have a sense of security and support. I also liked to see Mom was preparing the yutanpo. Mom put boiled water into the yutanpo then covered with a cute bunny print flannel.
When I was an elementary school, I used to use an electric yutanpo. It didn’t need any boiled water. It was much easier and could control the temperatures; low-medium-high. I knew it was so convenient but I missed my old yutanpo which made me a nostalgic feeling. I don’t know from when but hot water yutanpos went off the markets. I haven’t seen any yutanpos for a long time then I’ve been forgetting about it.
A few years ago I was walking along the mall. Suddenly something grabbed my eyes. I paused at the stores. Some colorful yutanpos were displayed at the store. They were a little smaller but accomplished like fitting with the times. I felt like my old yutanpo changed a princess in the Cinderella story.
Did I buy? Yes! But my yutanpo become beautiful like Cinderella and I become an aging face!
