Me and Rabbits
When I was a child, my primary school kept several kinds of pets and the students took turns taking care of them. Out of all those pets, I really loved to take care of the rabbits. So, when my turn came, I was very happy. I can say I would put my heart in it more than I did my studies. One day, when my turn came, I cleaned inside the rabbits’ cage and fed them with my friend, who was also in charge. I remember that there were about 10 rabbits there, so we had to give them a lot of food. But although we thought we gave enough food, it was gone quickly. Their appetite was more than I had expected. They were eating like horses. So, we decided to take grass from outside the school. But regardless of our efforts, they ate it quickly. So, we had to go outside again and again. That meant we couldn’t leave the school for a long time. It was becoming dark and cold. Even so, we couldn’t leave because we didn’t want them to be hungry. We thought that as long as they continued to eat, we had to feed them because they must still be hungry. I even thought that if I went home and left the rabbits feeling hungry, I couldn’t enjoy my dinner.
There were no lights and no sounds, which made us feel helpless. Even so, we continued to feed them, while almost crying. Then we heard a man approaching. We were so afraid that we couldn’t move even an inch. He said, “I received a call from your mothers saying you two still hadn’t come home. So I have been looking for you in the school and finally found you. What are you two doing?” We were relieved to hear these words, even though he sounded a little angry, because the man “saved us.” We burst into the tears we had held back until then.
We explained to him the situation we were in.
The main reason we had been so worried was that some of them ate the food up from the others and we were concerned about the weak-looking rabbits that hesitated to eat. It was like the world of lions where only the strong survive. I had never imagined the same thing was happening here in the world of rabbits. From their appearance, I had thought they would be gentle. My perception so far was totally dashed.
After listening to our story, the man smiled and called a taxi for us. When I got home, I cried again. I explained my feelings and what had happened to my mother. She was quiet, and then smiled. I was so relieved. I had made it home safely. Dinner was ready and smelled good. I enjoyed the dinner while remembering the rabbits. And I hoped all the rabbits enjoyed their food and sensed our feeling for them
